Register, GA (October 11, 2024) – One person lost their life, and at least one other was critically injured in a series of crashes that occurred Wednesday evening, October 9, on Interstate 16. According to reports from the Georgia State Patrol, troopers were already investigating a collision between a car and a truck on the westbound lanes of I-16 near mile marker 117, approximately a mile from U.S. 301 South, when a second, more severe crash took place.
The second incident involved two 18-wheelers and resulted in the death of one of the tractor-trailer drivers. Details from communications between dispatchers and emergency responders indicate that while authorities were focused on managing the first accident, the two large trucks collided nearby, leading to the fatality.
Emergency crews responded to the scene, where the impact of the crash caused significant damage to both trucks. While the investigation into both accidents continues, officials are working to determine the precise causes and sequence of events. The crashes led to extended closures on I-16, causing traffic delays as authorities cleared the wreckage and conducted their investigation. The investigations into the crash are currently ongoing.
We offer our sympathies to the family of the victim who lost their life in this crash.
